Materiality

I choose materials with a history and try to give them a longer life.

Horsehair. It's dyed in the studio in small batches with plant dyes: indigo, madder root, turmeric, sandalwood, logwood and others. Because every batch is hand-dyed, tones shift slightly from piece to piece.

Stones. About 90% of the stones I use are deadstock: rough left over from mines and old inventories. I cut each one in my lapidary studio for the piece it goes into. The sapphires set in the Rebirth serpents are vintage stones from the 1980s, sourced in London.

Metal. Gold-plated pieces are 18K gold over bronze or brass.

Pearls and shell. Freshwater pearls and Sea Bones shells are sourced from vintage vendors in San Francisco.

Made here. Every piece is made to order in my San Francisco studio, which keeps stock low, carbon imprint low and waste small.
